Headhunting = Direct search

Headhunting, or direct search, means looking for the best possible candidate for an open position at management, middle or expert level that has not been publicly advertised. The purpose of a direct search is to confidentially identify all suitable persons on the market, including so-called passive candidates, who are already in similar positions with a competitor.

WHEN IS HEADHUNTING USED?

Headhunting is used when there are no or not enough suitable or active jobseekers in the labour market. Headhunting is also a good practice in situations where you do not want to announce the recruitment in public. For example, the goal may be organisational change. It is desirable to complete the recruitment process as far as possible before the matter can be made public. Headhunting can also be used when a company has previously failed in its recruitment attempt and no longer wants to go through the public search process.

HOW DOES THE HEADHUNTING PROCESS WORK?

  1. The recruiter gets acquainted with the customer company, the job to be filled and the corporate culture of the customer company. The profile and future tasks of the employee are defined carefully in co-operation with the customer and the timetable for the application process is agreed upon. It is important that the collaboration between the headhunting consultant and the customer company is open so that the direct search is successful without any problems.

  2. Once the search has started, the recruiter will contact the appropriate professionals directly to inquire about their interest in the job on offer. In this way, the recruiter not only gets in touch with traditional jobseekers but also with passive job seekers who may not be looking for a new job but are open to a change of workplace, if the right opportunity arises.

  3. The recruiter verifies the applicants’ education and employment history, conducts any necessary background checks, and interviews several candidates, from which they select the most appropriate 1–3 applicants to present to the customer company. The customer company will still interview the candidates themselves and make their final choice.

Successful headhunting requires a skilled recruiter or a headhunting consultant. A detailed and multi-step headhunting process ensures that the candidates are precisely the right ones for the job.
